Working with families is such an amazing and rewarding practice area when you consider the unique social system that exists. Each member has a certain amount of power in this system, a role you might say, that must be respected and understood as it pertains to each and every other member. Working with families allows you to understand that when one member works to make changes in themselves this will undoubtedly affect the rest of the members. The goal of family therapy is often to shift the focus from identifying one “problem member” of the family to the goal of strengthening the family as a whole.
Parental guidance is also an area that may not necessarily have a family system approach, but is more focused on just working with the parents to provide some suggestions on boundaries, typical rules that are developmentally and age appropriate for their children, and increase their communication and collaboration with joint parenting.
