This area of practice is very near and dear to my heart given the amount of emotional turmoil substance abuse and addiction can cause not only to the individual but the family and loved ones that
are involved. Although substance abuse and addiction often refers to drugs (illegal and prescription) and alcohol, there are also various other areas that are equally damaging in this area. Tobacco is an extremely addictive habit due to nicotine and can lead to lung cancer, emphysema, stroke, etc. Exercise is another addiction that may not seem to be as insidious as drugs or alcohol, however this addiction can cause young people in their 20’s to lose their lives from heart attack and stroke and/or create a life that is constrained by bone disease such as osteoporosis.
